How many times have you bought something and you’ve told yourself, partner, friends and family….But I needed this?
Did you need the $500 one or was something that was $50 that does the same job just as appropriate?
Or are you someone that says ‘I need this’ when in fact it isn’t something you needed at all and you’re buying it for the sake of buying something.
Now it could be a handbag or it could be shoes…but you’re telling yourself this story that you need it when…guess what YOU DON’T NEED IT!!!
I know I used to be an impulsive buyer and the way I used tell myself it was okay was that I would say I needed it. It would make me stressed as I didn’t really have the money to be buying things and wasting money.
Then I considered what would happen if you didn’t keep telling yourself ‘you need this’ …
Instead of wasting money that I didn’t actually need to spend I could actually be saving that money and putting it towards the things in life I actually need, or I can then save up for an item in which I want.
So I changed my attitude around this and you can too…
It’s just as simple as understanding your needs and wants.
A need is defined by google as ‘require (something) because it is essential or very important rather than just desirable’.
A want is defined by google as…’have a desire to possess or do something; wish for’.
So when you’re actually out shopping when you pick an item up and you would normally tell yourself ‘I need this..’
actually ask yourself a couple of questions:
- Is this essential?
- Do I need this or do I want this?
- Why do I want this?
- Am I happy to forgo savings to buy this?
- Can I borrow this from somewhere for free?
- What else could I be doing this this money?
